An zweiter Stelle lag das Thema „Internationaler Marken- & Designschutz: Wie anmelden, was beachten, Kosten“.

First nationwide promotion week for IP Pre diagnostic services for small and medium-sized enterprises from 11th to 15th September 2017 in many German cities. Within the framework of the VIP4SME promotion week, SMEs can obtain free, neutral and confidential advice from experts from the participating patent information centres on how to create value and avoid risks in dealing with intellectual property (no legal advice). In focus: How can companies benefit from intellectual property? The approximately two-hour consultations on intellectual property (IP) include an initial analysis of the company-specific IP situation (IP Pre-Diagnostic). In particular, this covers industrial property rights (patents, utility models, trademarks and designs), but also aspects of the so-called "soft IP", which include trade secrets, and copyright. On this basis, companies receive an initial assessment of their economic opportunities and risks in the area of intellectual property with very specific recommendations for action - from individual suggestions for the optimum use of IP in the company to approaches for strategic competitive advantages. The consultation ends with an "auditor report", which is made available to the company free of charge and provides valuable information for optimizing the company's own IP situation. Individual appointments are limited and should be arranged in advance by telephone or e-mail at the respective venue. For contact details see below. The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will officially launch the Knowledge Development Box (Certification of Inventions) Act 2017 at Enterprise Ireland headquarters, Eastpoint Business Park, Dublin at 2pm on June 21st, which will be followed by FREE industry seminar entitled “Profiting from Trade Secrets”. Trade secrets are a very important type of IP assets for most innovative companies, regardless of size and sector, as they often underpin a company’s competitive advantage.  However, experience shows that many companies, particularly SME’s, lack the necessary awareness and knowledge to manage them effectively.  This means that they are at risk of being lost and opportunities for future IP protection, e.g. patents, are greatly diminished.  The Certification of Inventions Scheme, which is only available to SME’s, is therefore an important Irish Government measure aimed at encouraging R&D performing SMEs to manage and exploit their IP to greater effect.

This series of four one-hour virtual classroom sessions will introduce the main concepts of IP management and how IP can add value to companies. IP management extends beyond the mere administration of patents, trademarks and copyrights and interfacing with attorneys. It includes the identification of strategically valuable IP, development of IP strategies, the use of patent information for decision-making processes, IP portfolio management, IP cost planning, licensing and enforcement as well as  freedom-to-operate analysis. The sessions are particularly suitable for staff in small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) coming to IP management from a background in, for example, R&D, business development or general management.

Start of Visegrad Patent Institute

The Visegrad Patent Institute starts its operation on July 1st 2016

The Visegrad Patent Institute (VPI) is an intergovernmental organization for cooperation in the field of patents established by the four Visegrad countries: the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Republic of Poland and the Slovak Republic (V4 countries).  The VPI was appointed as an International Searching Authority (ISA) and International Preliminary Examining Authority (IPEA) under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) in order to attain a wide range of important objectives at various (global, European, regional and national) levels. The VPI fills a territorial gap within the global system of the PCT, acting as an International Authority for Central and Eastern Europe. It is noteworthy that in WIPO, the Group of Central European and Baltic States is the only regional group without a functioning International Authority under the PCT. The VPI also makes up for the missing link in the network of European PCT authorities. Therefore, the VPI is intended to support the development and usefulness of the PCT system by adding further competent resources to those already available, especially in respect of a region currently without its own International Authority in place.  The structure of the VPI follows the existing successful model of the Nordic Patent Institute. Thus, the governance of the VPI as an intergovernmental organization is ensured by its Administrative Board composed of the representatives of the Contracting States, while the VPI’s Secretariat, headed by the Director, is responsible for the organization, day-to-day management and administrative support of the VPI’s work.

Estonia helps to develop Central Asian intellectual property

The Estonian Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Centre
Read more

Experts from the Estonian Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Centre (EIPTTC) are helping to develop both the understanding and the use of intellectual property in Central Asia. Being a success story among the ex-Soviet countries, Estonia has a wealth of experience and knowledge to share. Today in Kyrgyzstan EIPTTC experts are giving a lecture to different members of faculty from Kyrgyzstan universities. Kyrgyzstan hopes to implement the same kind of intellectual property study program in its schools and universities as in Estonia. After almost three years of successful cooperation, the Kyrgyzstan government based many points of their intellectual property guide plan on knowledge gained from EIPTTC. For EIPTTC experts it is a reward for great amount of work. „We have been active in Central Asia for years and it is good to see the progress, that has occurred over that time. We have had over a dozen visits, lectures and workshops in Kyrgyzstan and they have been eager learners“ says the director of EIPTTC, Mr. Marius Kuningas. In addition to Kyrgyzstan, EIPTTC have been active in other Central Asian countries as well, such as Tajikistan. „It is easier for us to share our experiences over there because of our shared history. We understand the process that they are going through, because we ourselves went through it 20 years ago. And because of it we can get our message across easier, than other western partners“ explains Mr. Kuningas.
