Step 1 | Prepare your trademark – make sure your trade mark is a distinctive: a word, logo, picture or other sign that clearly identifies your goods and services from other traders.- decide what classes of goods or services you require. – check if someone else has already registered or applied to register a similar mark for similar goods or services. – check our database to see if someone else is using a similar mark for similar goods or services. |
Step 2 | Fill in the trademark application form via our application guide (“Varemerkesøknad”), see “Applicant’s toolbox”. |
Step 3 | We respond by issuing a filing receipt which includes an application number. |
Step 4 | We carry out an examination to make sure your application meets certain formal requirements. We also carry out a search in trademark databases and other relevant material to assess whether or not your trademark is distinctive, or if there are any earlier conflicting rights.We will send you a report informing you of the result of our examination and highlight any objections. |
Step 5 | If there are no objections the application will be registered and processed for publication. The registration certificate is sent to the applicant. When the trademark is registered, it is published in the Norwegian Trademarks Gazette (“Norsk Varemerketidende”). The opposition period runs for three months from the date of publication. |
Step 6 | There is a period of three months where anyone can oppose the registration of your mark. |
Step 7 | If no one opposes your registration or you overcome any challenges, your registration becomes final and we send you a letter stating this. |
