General Information

NIPO is a government authority organised under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries.

NIPO contributes to competitiveness and helps to strengthen Norwegian trade and industry in various ways. We offer a wide range of services concerning patent, trademark and design rights. Some of these services are free, others are offered on a commercial basis.

Customer Service Centre

Our Customer Service Centre can help you with the following:

  • Answers to general information concerning patents, trademarks or designs
  • Answers to questions concerning the application process, status information etc
  • Advice on how to apply for a patent, or for a trademark or design registration
  • Completing your application form for patent protection, or for trademark or design registration

Our free online database provides daily updated information on trademarks, patents and designs in Norway.

Commercial services

Our Preliminary Search Service can provide you with useful information both before and after you file your application for a patent, a registered trademark or a registered design. We have access to NIPO’s own database and other relevant databases all over the world. We have engineers, lawyers, librarians and experienced staff, ready to supply you with important information – to help you make the right decisions. You will receive this information within a few days.

We offer several monitoring services. We can give you a report on your competitor’s activities, on a particular technical field, on specific trademarks, or on other areas in which you wish to keep up to date with the latest developments.

We hold a wide variety of courses and seminars throughout the year. The majority of our courses are held in Norwegian, although we do offer some specialist courses in English.
